PLASENCIA AUDITORIUM SHORTLISTED FOR MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD

01/2019

The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award is a Prize given biennially by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe “to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe”. The 40 buildings shortlisted for the 2019 edition of the Prize have been recently announced and we are really happy to see among them the Plasencia Auditorium and Congress Centre.

This exceptional building was designed by the Madrid-based SelgasCano architectural office. FHECOR participated in this building developing the project and the construction details of the textile envelope manufactured by Lastra & Zorrilla.

The textile skin is composed by a single ETFE sheet supported on a grid of circular tubes. An additional system of struts and cables has been provided to stand for horizontal wind forces, thus allowing larger spans between the supports of the steel structure on the concrete main structure.

The close collaboration between the architects, the textile manufacturer and Fhecor made possible to develop an innovative solution that responds to the architectural need of designing a light and elastic skin that creates a smooth transition between the exterior and the interior.
