OPENING OF THE DANUBE CROSSING IN THE D4R7 PROJECT

09/2021

The D4R7 project includes the design, construction, and management of a pair of highways in Bratislava, Slovakia: the radial R7 and the by-pass D4. The Danube Crossing, renamed “Lužný most” after a poll, was opened to traffic last Sunday.
This crossing is composed of two approach viaducts and two bridges spanning the Danube river and the Kayak channel, which is parallel to the river. The total length of the crossing is 3 km, with a maximum span of 220 m. Only two piers are within the stream of the river, respecting the necessary clearance to allow the inland navigation. These prestressed concrete bridges were built using the balanced cantilever method, by means of a complex movable scaffolding system (MSS).
With a width of 35 m, the bridges incorporate a multi-use trail in addition to the car lanes of the highway. As seen in one of the pictures, this bike and pedestrian lane had a warm welcome on the inauguration day!
FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores worked from 2016 until 2021 as Design Checkers of the main structures in the D4R7 projects, including this crossing over the Danube. The construction joint venture was participated by Ferrovial and PORR AG. Project design by Torroja Ingeniería.
