CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS AT THE GORDIE HOWE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE

12/2022

The construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, keeps progressing. FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores was part of the design team of the main bridge, which will become the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in North America with 853 m (2798 ft). Currently, FHECOR is providing on-site erection engineering services.
The connections between the tower legs have been completed, and the top sections of the towers, including the cable anchor boxes, are currently under construction. The side span deck, consisting of precast panels on top of longitudinal steel girders and transverse steel beams, is also being constructed from the ground on top of temporary bents.
The main span will be erected using a cantilever method, meaning that the cables in every segment and the correspondent side span cables will be installed as every main span segment is completed. The steel structure of the main span, as well as the concrete panels, are erected piece by piece with the help of a crane on top of the already constructed deck. Therefore, the first step in the main span construction is the assembly of the crane on top of the pier table, below the tower. This milestone was reached last week.
At FHECOR, we are really pleased to be part of this project, which will provide an additional route to the busiest trade corridor between the US and Canada. FHECOR is in JV with CFCSL, as part of the design team led by AECOM, while the construction consortium is Bridging North America, formed by AECON, Fluor, and Dragados. The Bridge Authority is WDBA.
