The new terminal at Fuerteventura Airport surprises passengers.

11/2009

Surprised and astonished. This is how many passengers were left standing on using the new arrivals terminal at the airport on the island of Fuerteventura. Not only those who arrived, but also those who were waiting in the terminal, showed their admiration for the new structure which quadruples the surface area which existed up until now. That is because Fuerteventura Airport has, since yesterday, a new arrivals terminal with a 20,000m2 surface area in respect to the 5,400m2 it previously had. The new lounge can now handle up to 4,000 passengers per hour.

A group of passengers coming from Gran Canaries was the first to use the new terminal, which has 13 baggage collection belts.

The extension Works were carried out in the area adjacent to the existing terminal, which only had seven baggage collection belts. In a later phase, AENA contemplated the possibility to convert the same into an extension of the check-in lounge.

The new area has a basement floor with a baggage deposit courtyard at the same level as the platform, with the corresponding baggage unload belts and offices, a ground floor where you may find the Passport control, baggage reclaim area, customs, arrivals lounge and access carriageways for private vehicles, taxis and buses which link up with the existing ones.

The extension of the arrivals terminal shall have a second phase which contemplates a further extension of the same, including another check-in lounge, which will begin to come into service slowly between this month and the month of September. The total investment will be approximately €25 million where 25% corresponds to the new arrival area.

At the same time, other actions are being fulfilled on the air field which complement the new terminal area, such as the prolongation of the platform or the already finished control tower.

The combination of all these interventions shall allow the users of Fuerteventura Airport to enjoy, once finished, an 88,000m2 terminal which shall grant the airport the capacity to offer a high quality level of service to eight million passengers per year.

These projects form part of the Canaries Airports Infrastructures Plan, whose objective is to offer Canarian airports with the best installations adapted to the future demands of 2020.

AENA’s hedge is reflected in the important investment it has fulfilled in the island airport, which has turned it into one of the most important at a national level. In 2008, Fuerteventura Airport registered 4,492,076 passengers and 44,552 flights.

If AENA had invested in other sectors such as the dock, the new La Hondura port would be a reality today.
