REFURBISHMENT OF SANTA BARBARA BRIDGE IN ENCISO (LA RIOJA, SPAIN)

02/2023

The Regional Government of La Rioja awarded FHECOR the refurbishment project of the old masonry bridge over the Cidacos River. The structure is 35 m long with an average width of 4.5 m and vaults spanning 2.30 m, 13.75 m, and 7.85 m. The central vault exhibits a significantly deformed shape, severely restricting the capacity of a road with frequent traffic of heavy lorries.

The proposed solution, a saddling, provides simultaneously enhanced and definitive loadbearing capacity with aesthetical respect to the bridge appearance and configuration. This technique, which requires the complete closure of the bridge (an adequate detour is provided), is entirely advantageous, implying a comprehensive longitudinal strengthening, also contributing decisively to the stability of spandrel walls, containing, before the intervention, an infill exerting lateral pressure and the leakage of water. Additionally, no special maintenance care shall be needed.

Since the main vault was considerably deformed, adjusted centering is necessary to prevent any risk. Then, concrete is poured over the extrados according to an adequate sequence.

FHECOR elaborated the construction project. The works are expected to start in spring 2023.
